I'm still a reformed consumerist if I can't stop op shopping aren't I? No?! ...

Latest Oppie treasure finds as captured via various iPhone apps - a little addicted I must admit - the above are oil paintings, and the true colours are gorgeous, the frames are not! - $3 each...

...*sigh* I have been scouting for these Golden Hands books for ages and had only ever been able to get issue 1 and 2 - today I found issues 1 - 18 in practically new condition other than the lovely paper bookmarks marking the previous owners projects, for the bargain basement price of $6 including a stack of other children's picture books and educational books (some shown below), the last tea cup for my market project and a cute 80's pillowcase! Right place at the RIGHT time! Yay!

...I also scored this amazing oval mirror with gorgeous etched birds on it (sorry about the pic!) for $6. These beauties are going for between $20 - $60 even in the local oppies so I was delighted to find this lovely one so cheaply. Trying to stop it migrating to my Mums is my only concern, she has a great collection of them but not a bird or in this shape. Will have to search for another one for her, better say a little prayer to the oppie gods although I fear my luck may have run out this year with those Golden Hands, hmmm...

...

Here are some other little moments to be grateful for from my life this last week, as captured by my trusty iPhone, and with much truer colours...

Last but not least the winner of this weeks giveaway is Shelley of the cutest felt pincushion shop on etsy Spincushions. Thanks for the address Shelley I will post your little parcel off by the end of the week! Yay!

Thanks for all the comments for this giveaway too! It is great to hear that so many people are reviving snail mail one letter or note or parcel at a time. Yay! for snail mail and Yay! for Helena of Little Mo and friends and Bianca of Goodnight Little Spoon for offering us inspiration and gorgeous stationery and for keeping snail mail fun! xx

Oppie finds...

I have had lots of luck with my Oppie/Tip Shop finds lately. The fab retro Willow canister and cute Australian butter dish above I snapped up for a steal at the Burnie Tip Shop with heaps of other goodies. It was one of those days where you walk in and go: "I'll be having that...and that...and that..." almost takes the fun out of the hunt - almost ha ha! :)

Had to have this great vintage cot sheet that had been backed with flanellette as a play mat or something maybe, gorgeous vintage print! The strawberry apron had my name on it too, not that I need another vintage apron!

Vintage Stamford (NSW - Aust) beauty case from the Tip Shop, and a big stack of awesome childrens educational games from my local Oppie. We have now fully decided to actively homeschool The Munchkin after years of maybes. I am now on the lookout for "classroom" goodies. More about all this in another post though I think.

We also didn't need another vintage doll's bed as I am lucky to have two from my childhood that The Munchkin uses, but for $4 and with that gorgeous decal how could I leave it there!! Too sweet.

Also with the games were some puzzles, this circus one, a Humpty Dumpty (Playschool) and a Babar one, a couple of dollars - hours of fun!

We also did some gardening over the weekend. We just have a pot garden at The Cottage, but we transplanted some slug/snail eaten peas from our neglected house veggie patch into pots and added a cage to keep the Wallabies and Possums away. The Munchkin is so excited (and so am I!) as she planted them from seeds and they have little flowers on them and everything. I picked up two of the little aluminium teapots from the Tip Shop too and they are perfect for little hands to water with.

My main reason for Op shopping this week was to give homes to little orphaned tea cups and saucers to make into planters for this awesome vintage/handmade/earth friendly/beachy/retro/summer/hippy  upcoming market to be held in Wynyard Tas on Sat 27th November and Sat 11th December 2010. There will be lots of great local crafters selling their wares along with a busker and some Vegge food! I will be most likely holding a High Maintenance Hippy stall at the December one! Yay!

I came home with quite a stack of mismatched pieces, some utterly neglected...

but with some help from Dad to drill the holes I got 6 planted out, with lots more to do once I get a proper drill bit. Who knew drilling through ceramic and fine china was so hard!!

I will be back tomorrow with this weeks giveaway as I plum forgot about taking a photo for it...hmmm...

I'm off to drool over the copy of Spaces I finally got my hands on today...

two handsome fellows...

Today I...

...sent these teeny amigurumi cuties to their new home. Every time I make one I think it's my new favourite, they take on a little character of their own.  I hope they are well received, its always scary for me sending out handmade-with-love goodies!

...had an epic Oppie session which I will share tomorrow!

...and had yummy lunch and a play date with this lovely crafty lady and her wee gorgeous one! We talked about this fabulous market starting in Wynyard Tasmania on Saturday 27th November - from 9am to 1.30pm. I'm hoping to get organised to have my own stall at the second one on 11th December! Eek! Exciting but scary too!

You should most certainly get yourself along if you can and support some super talented local crafters and makers. Buy something for yourself or finish that Christmas list whilst supporting handmade! Yay!

Some oppie finds and Nanna chic ...

Last week I found - Oppie pillowcases ($1.50 for 4!), gorgeous green enamel mixing bowl (50c!) and a charming 1960's American children's book with gorgeous pictures and lots of equality ($3.00) The book is in a pretty rough state and I planned to cut it up but The Munchkin has taken a shine to it so it may stay together for a while.

I needed to make a present for a gorgeous friend's birthday so got into my vintage fabric stash and channelled a little dottie angel to come up with this:

The flowery red is a piece of vintage barkcloth I nabbed from my Mum a while ago, with a piece of a vintage FQ from this years swap and a doily I found at an Oppie in Ballarat on our holiday. The yellow on the back (and small piece under the doily) is Spottie quilting fabric that I picked up on sale for the bargain price of $2.50 a metre. I am really happy with how it turned out and have plans to make a big pile of them for our house and as Christmas presents so if you know me well - watch out! (and feel free to suggest the colours you would prefer! he he!)

Don't forget to enter this weeks giveaway, and thanks for all the children's book recommendations so far!

Book lust...

I am currently coveting the new Frankie mook "Spaces", available 17th Nov. It looks like lots of eclectic/ vintage interior fun! I love to see real houses with real people living in them, so many mag shoots are overstyled, and the houses cookie-cutters - they just don't seem homely!   ...

available here

and of course Pip's new book "Sew La Tea Do"

available here

I have lots of books on my wishlist actually. So many books, so little time (and money ha ha!)

4 weeks of giveaways - week #1 ...

I recently ordered a stack of Tees during the Threadless  $10 sale. I loved the above design for The Munchkin but could no longer get it in an appropriate size (please excuse poor quality pics, its very dark and gloomy here and my poor camera finds it hard to cope!) As it was only $5 I ordered a mens large anyway with visions of adjusting it for her. A little play on the machine today and using the pink dress as a guide I came up with this which I am really happy with:

I was too lazy to rethread the machine so went with white construction seams then once it was all together went over the seams for a real deconstructed/reconstructed look. The sleeves were simply cut down leaving the original length and one seam intact, and as you can see the neck is the original one too. Simple and quick!

...

So, I am a week late starting this but here goes...

As another little Thankyou for your amazing support of this blog (and me too I guess!) and since I wrote my 100th post a while ago I wanted to do a 4 week giveaway and share some little favourites with you.

All I ask in return is that you leave a comment with something you love, hate, or want to see more or less of on High Maintenance Hippy. Obviously I write about my family, renovating, op shopping etc and these things won't change and sorry but neither will the rambling, ha ha... but I am open to suggestions! :)

It would also be nice if you were a follower.

Leave a comment before midnight (ish)  this Sunday 14th November 2010 to be in the draw and I'll use the Random Generator to select the winner on Monday before announcing the next giveaway.

Oh yeah, and I guess I should show you what you win hey...

Issue 4 of the awesome Mix Tape kindly donated by The Haby Goddess and an Amy Butler Swing Bag pattern that I bought, never used and want to see go to a good home (It has not been opened.)

So there you are, if they sound like things you would like in your home, or could use as gifts please leave a comment with your suggestions. Thankyou again, you really are the best readers EVER!!

Oh me, oh my! It's been awhile! ...

A few pics to show you what we have been up to lately! The days have been quite sunny and warm (generally!) so lots of little outdoor tea parties have been happening which is nice finally. I was so much happier with this edition of Frankie as frankly (he he) the last issue was abysmal!!

After not stopping in at our house for over a week the Lilac was in full flower and smelt divine! Pity about the super long lawns and crazy weeds, oh well, we'll get there!

Mr HMH has almost finished painting inside thankfully and the tasks are getting ticked off our list finally. I have started painting the exterior alcove near our front door and was keen to get back for a second coat until the rain came again...sigh...

...however I did tackle the bathroom floor with a coat of Berger extra tough paving paint! Due to the shear cost and work involved in getting our floors ready for staining with Black Japan we have taken the easy way and chosen to paint all over with this paint. It is hard wearing, comes in the colour we want, and goes on easily - the bathroom only needed one thick coat! I sanded off any lumps and bumps but left the overall texture in here as I feel it will help with the non-slip factor, and as the texture is pretty even it came up well I think. We have used Dulux Antique White on the walls in here and throughout the house (other than the living/kitchen) and also used it in our previous house. It is the perfect white for me (and apparently 1000's of other Australians!), warm without being yellow and carries other colours beautifully.

We are now just waiting on our tiler to come and put up our glass tiles behind the shower/bath and then we can box the bath in properly, put the skirting/architraves back and get the plumber back to put the new vanity in. After what we've been through to get it to this stage the remaining jobs are a walk in the park!!

The sad thing is that as the house will go straight on the market we will not get to enjoy our (hopefully) beautiful new bathroom. I think I will have to sneak up there for a bath to test it out don't you!

And speaking of water The Munchkin and I put together (very quickly I might add!) this cake for my Dad as we are having a bit of a pirate phase around here lately and it was thought that Poppy needed a pirate cake. We used the awesome All Together Cake recipe from the Frankie Afternoon Tea Cookbook  (which is back in stock incidently so if you are after a copy get theeself over herehere or here now!) that has become a real favourite as it is super quick and easy and tastes light and delicious. In my speedy wisdom I used a green paint sample card for the waves, not sure about the toxicity of that idea but it looked good and was only on for about 10 minutes!

I finally went and saw Eat Pray Love last night and I LOVED it!! I know people have been bagging it and that the book itself hasn't spoken to many people but for me, at this point of my life, they really touched me. The filming in the movie was breathtaking and I did not find myself comparing it to the book, just enjoying the journey...and I left craving pasta from our local Italian restaurant! Please see it if you are wanting to but have heard bad things, make up your own mind, you might be surprised! I got to go to the cinema alone which was BLISSFUL! I love going to the movies with friends but don't often get the chance due to our different schedules so if I really want to see something now I go alone. I love the freedom and what is almost decadence, of sitting down and doing something just for me, uninterrupted. It is not often we do only one thing at a time, multi tasking has a lot to answer for!

O-k-a-y... this is probably my most disjointed and rambley post ever, and that's saying something! If you saw it through - thanks!! I promise to have my thoughts more organised next time!

I will be back with that giveaway I promised very soon, just getting some final things together but as a little teaser I will be having 1 giveaway A WEEK until December! How does that sound! Yep! I hear ya! Sounds good!
