Foraging...

Yesterday The Munchkin and I went for a drive to forage for some fruit. I knew where there would be a fence full of scrummy un-sprayed blackberries so we started there. I took the easy ones only and there are heaps still ripening for another visit next weekend. The rustle in the vines put me off getting too amongst them but was a great opportunity to talk with the Munchkin again about what to do if we see a snake and how to be noisy and stamp around to tell them we are there if we think they might be around.

Next we stopped in at a little road-side cafe that I always mean to stop at and discovered glorious home grown Nectarines for a measly $3.50 a kilo so happily bought two. She also made a lovely pot of tea and had homemade, homegrown raspberry cordial for The Munchkin. On the way out I spotted apples going to waste on the ground so grabbed a few also. The smell of the Nectarines on the way home was AMAZING and the apples tasted like APPLES! You just can't beat the taste and smell of home
grown fruit and veggies.

The apples, blackberries and a few nectarines became yummy sponge top pudding...

...and the remainder of the nectarines I poached and short term bottled (no water bath preserving) for breakfasts. I was dying to eat one fresh but as I have an allergy to stone fruits I couldn't really risk the itchy throat (eww!) The Munchkin and Mr HMH tell me they were delicious though!

Then today while up at our house I realised that our neighbours two huge trees of nectarines were going to waste so plucked up the courage to ask if we could pick them. They kindly agreed, so Mr HMH went over and picked about 5kg for us with heaps left for another day. Tomorrow I will make some jam with some and take a jar to the neighbours, then poach the remainder and freeze them.

I love summer fruits and the fact that free fruit is out there for the asking/taking is pretty amazing! Locally we have a group called Produce To the People who take donations of excess or unwanted produce and distribute it to local charities and shelters. They are doing an amazing job of stopping food going to waste and I wish more people would look at the trees in their yards or their over abundant supplies of veggies and give them a call.

I think we are so lucky in Tasmania that we have such an amazing home grown food culture. So many of the houses in my area have abundant fruit and citrus trees and I know a few that are delighted to give you bag fulls if you ask. My lovely neighbours (on the other side) have an abundant lemon tree that fruits sweet juicy lemons all year round and they are quite happy for us to climb on his shed roof to pick them. Pancakes with lemon and sugar are my all time favourite home cooked sweet treat! He has often given us bags of Nashis and last year even grew 5 tomato plants just for us to put in our garden! I hope whomever buys our house will appreciate having such an amazing neighbour like we do!

Do you forage for food? Have you a lovely neighbour or are you a lovely neighbour? I'd love to hear!

Preparing for the March 'Made With Love Bazaar'...

I recently purchased this gorgeously industrial library card file from Ebay and it arrived safely this week! My Mum was not so impressed with having to carry all 7.5kg of it when she picked up my mail at the PO for me. Thanks Mum!
I can't wait to set up my table at the March Bazaar with it. The long top gives me some extra height and display space for my newly themed stall - stay tuned :)

To be able to create my new product line it was high time I tidied my recently created little nook so I could actually find, and be inspired by my supplies...

...so now my drawers are all sorted and everything is grouped together nicely...

...and the crafting can begin!!

PS. A big Thankyou for all your nice comments about my reno preview! It is so exciting to be this close to the end and to be finally almost able to share it with you. Big hugs to you all xxx

Found...

...a great new cafe and vintage clothes shop in Launceston, Tasmania called Nanna's via Isis. It is located down the side of Toyworld or you can reach it round the back of B&E bank off Brisbane St. Check out what Isis has to say about it here.

...also Ut Si Cafe & Gallery in Perth, Tasmania (86 Main Rd) found via Killiecrankie Farm. The owners commitment to providing ethical, local and fresh produce to their customers is commendable. This extends to them having their own kitchen garden, and not providing meat on the menu if they can not source ethically produced product. They have discovered the wonders of Mt Gnomon Farm free range Essex Saddleback pork products, which is a local-to-me range that covers all the bases you could want in ethically produced pork products, and then some. The cafe itself is in a converted church and boasts stunning tables made from a reclaimed bridge with the bolt holes gorgeously filled with Myrtle, and the original cathedral ceiling. And the food looks AMAZING!!

I am absolutely bursting to try both these cafes and am most definitely treating myself to a day trip as soon as the house is on the market!! (Only a few weeks to go!!)

Happenings in High Maintenance Hippy land...

New professionally printed postcards and...

...greeting cards for the market have arrived! Yay!

Vintage wooden cotton reels have become...

...cute fabric tape rolls.

Crazy, messy rooms are becoming...

...functional spaces!

...with Oppie finds to fill them with. I contemplated recovering the stool, but for now at least the orange is making me smile!

The holy grail of Thermoses has been found for $1!! (Yes, dear husband - of course there is a holy grail of Thermoses!)

...and perfect planter boxes from Vinnies adopted for The Munchkin's little plant corner. *sigh*

...and as for me, I am reading this and being gentle with myself until the sadness can pass and the real healing can begin. Thankyou so much to everyone who has left kind comments to my previous post. It is such a personal journey but one that I felt writing about would be an important part of my healing process. None of us have 100% happy lives unfortunately and there must always be winters to our summers.

I'm off to watch some Little House...

Zippity do dah, zippity aye, a red vintage sewing machine is coming our way...

After much deliberating we have chosen this gorgeous girl to welcome into our home for The Munchkins 4th birthday! I am very excited to meet her!

She will be coming all the way from Bradford, England and will hopefully arrive on time!! If you are interested the seller I bought this from has another one listed here. I can't vouch for the seller yet but she was certainly most helpful and friendly and the postage was surprisingly cheap as it is under 2kg so classifies as a small packet with Royal Mail.

I hope this will give The Munchkin a good feel for the basics for a few years till she is ready for a "real" machine, and my goodness, it's soooo lovely to look at isn't it!  :)

A proud mama moment...

Oh my! The Munchkin asked me this morning if she can have a sewing machine for her birthday so she can sew next to me! My heart just expanded to the size of the house. Gosh she makes her Mama happy and proud!

Now to find one suitable and cute, and fill her little sewing basket for her too...
