An Introduction of the vintage kind...

Photo courtesy of The Misadventures Of a Vintage Shopper

I would like to introduce you to my new friend Emma who has been persuaded into sharing her vintage life, craft and wedding planning with us via The Misadventures of A Vintage Shopper.

Emma is planning a vintage styled wedding and is having a lovely time collecting gorgeous Oppie tea cups, radios, plates and such to style it. Recently her fiance and her had some dreamy engagement photos taken by the very talented Megan of Megan Bourne Photography, which she styled with her treasures.
The combination of the two girls is fit for a magazine spread and I am so excited to be able to follow Emma on her blog journey, and to be able to introduce you to her.

Emma also makes paper-ie goodies under the name of Quite Frankly My Deer, like origami flower balls and doily confetti, and dabbles in other crafty fun too! Oh yes, and she has a large chunk of her heart taken by Cath Kidston!

I would love for you to make her feel welcome by popping over and saying hi, I'm sure she will put on a pot of tea for you!  :)

Yours in delight,

Before and After - Part 2...

Here are some more of  the "Before" and "Afters" of our Bathroom reno. The space is quite small so when we redesigned it we chose to turn the vanity around and give some more floor space plus allow a second person to enter the room while someone is brushing their teeth etc. It was a small change but made a huge difference to how we use the room now.

The small mirrored cupboard was built so sturdily into the wall studs that we eventually just chipped off the part that was sticking out and plastered straight over the top. The only light was the light you can see above the mirror, and yes, that IS a pull cord! We have a lovely remote controlled IXL now which feels like a luxury. The lack of breeze feels like a luxury too as we lived with plastic covering the holes in the wall around the bath for some time as Mr HMH ended up working in NT for 5 months after they had come down.
I'll admit to being a bit gung-ho about ripping them down in the first place...

We are so pleased with the way it turned out and I LOVE the built in shelving unit, black floors and black bath surround the most.

It looks like we may be moving back in again either while we wait for it to sell or for good so I look forward to styling it up a bit. I have a lovely Oppie oval shaped pie-crust mirror that will look great above the vanity and a few little ideas up my sleeve.

You can read more about the during here and here.

In a completely different matter, you should stop by Dee's place and check out her Real Life Pin project
 In here own words:

"i've decided to make it a regular personal challenge to replace wishful thinking with reality.
because, by it's very nature, inspiration cannot remain passive - it must be acted upon. and besides, wishful thinking only creates a nice cosy spot for Envy and Discontentment to settle down and strangle the gratitude in your heart"

It is such a great idea I think and I am so happy she has started this. There is a Flickr group where you can post your own inspiration and outcome pics. I have a few outfits planned that I pinned to my Pinterest board and am keen to try in "real" life :) What have you been inspired by and interpreted?

Have a fabulous weekend,

Yours in waiting,

As you may know our house is on the market after our extensive renovation. I will be posting a few more "before" and "afters" soon but in the mean time I would love if you could pass on this info to anyone you may think could be interested. I hate to use my blog for this but I promise to be back to regular posting soon :)

Spinning...

Our Somerset Brown Owl craft group had the wonderful opportunity to try out some spinning today with the direction of a lovely lady from the Burnie Handweaver, Spinners and Dyers Guild. The Guild have a display on at the Wonders of Wynyard and were there today to talk about their craft and share their experience. I would highly recommend popping in to see the wonderful work on display. Some of the pieces are for sale and are very reasonable considering the amount of work that goes into them from animal to garment/item.

Irene made it look so effortless, but we were not fooled, we new it would be a challenge!

We all had so much fun and are at least a tiny bit smitten with the idea of getting our own wheels. The rhythm of the wheel and the tactile nature of feeding the carded fleece in is so relaxing and lovely I can see why people take the time to do it. The youngest in our group is 10 and she did a wonderful job, even though we did make her go first!
We have been invited along to a Guild meeting and I for one can't wait!!

A big thankyou must go to the lovely Guild ladies for being so welcoming and willing to share their knowledge.

Yours in awe,

New do...

My blog that is... not me, that cute pic is from not long after Mr HMH and I got together in 2005 - awww!  :)

Anyway (!!), what do you think about the new look? Too stark? I'm aiming for a nice clean organised Winter look to counteract my messy crazy life right now. I think I like it for now anyway.

In other news, I found some boots today, Yay! Not at all what I had in mind of course but they are brown, they are leather and they go over my ample calves hehe. I'll show you tomorrow when I pick them up!

Yours in contemplation,

Before and After - Part 1...

So I promised you some before and after photos from our reno and I have been Picniking madly to get them in some kind of order. The first three photos are the previous owners things from the advertising pics, and the rest of them show our crazy, messy, unorganised living over the period. I have recapped here a list of the things we did to this house. As is the case with lots of renos if you knocked on our door today you would probably have no idea of the sheer amount of work we have done to turn this house from "dive" to "diva"!

I probably should have drawn a floor plan as it is hard to get the idea of how things are layed out but the existing kitchen in the before photos was a small room with the island  bench cutting it in half. We ripped out the wall between there and the dining area (3rd photo) which leads on to the loungeroom (4th picture) so now it is one big space.

There was also no access to the backyard from the back of the house you had to go out the side door which leads to the laundry so in the bottom two pictures below we removed the window and replaced it with our white aluminium French doors.

We also replaced the badly placed kitchen window with gorgeous white aluminium bifolds (cafe windows!) to really be able to enjoy entertaining and bring the outside in. They were a heck of a lot dearer than a regular window of the same size would have been but everytime I open them I know they were worth it!

The floors are all Tas Oak but after we (and the glued down lino) had finished with them we opted for the wow factor and ease of black painted boards. Hardly any prep and no sanding meant that they were finished over a few hours. We used paving paint for this after much debate and I LOVE them. Any scratches are easily touched up and blend in seamlessly and yes! They do show the dirt but that only makes the house cleaner as I have to sweep more often!

We carpeted the small lounge room with a hardy nylon and supersoft underlay as the backyard is beautiful rich red soil and the house needs to be practical. I was able to find an offcut roll super cheap which brought down the cost considerably.

We mainly used cheap Spotlight rollerblinds in this space and the roman blind above the french doors worth $500 was a sample or miss-size for $20, and actually matches the rest of the house! I love a bargain!

*sigh* I must say I love this space now. It flows better and is much more practical for a family. The colours and design ideas I envisioned have translated to real life beautifully and it all blends seamlessly with the rest of the house. Although we picked bold statements with the floors and red tiles ultimately the space is quite neutral and most things work really well in here.

It is not a huge space but perfectly big enough to not feel cramped, and with a huge hallway and decent size bedrooms, not to mention the enclosed backyard area it suits our family nicely. Ha ha, sorry if I sound like I'm trying to sell it to you, It's just nice to be looking back at it from the other side of the reno finally! We have really enjoyed the house so much more now the pressure is no longer on to get it finished and on the market.

It is by no means perfect and we have no illusions that it is a mansion but we did it with (mostly) our own hands and we are really proud. Sure it has caused budget blow outs, fights and almost a divorce and dragged out due to lack of motivation, money and Mr HMH having to go to Darwin to work for 5 months when the GEC hit but it really was only a short 3 years from our life (!!) in the grand scheme of things.

If you have read all the way through - thanks! If you have any questions please ask as I would love to answer them. I could talk about this house forever ;p

Yours in reno reminiscing,
Allana xxx
