Elixir for my soul...

You wouldn't know it from reading my blog but I am a devourer of books. I can happily go through at least one a week when I have managed to get to the library to stock up, and have found suitable fodder. I will not force myself to finish a book I am not enjoying, and tend to choose ones from the chick-lit genre lately.

I intended to keep a record on here of the books I have read, for my own interest really but have yet to sort this out. One day soon maybe.

The two books ( I can't remember the name of the third!) I have read so far this month were random finds (I tend to choose books by their cover and blurb) that worked out very well indeed. The first one was the book featured above "The Three Miss Margarets" by Louise Shaffer and I LOVED it. Very southern, strong women characters and a lovely mystery to solve. It is written to flash between the "before" and "after" and the author executes this brilliantly.

The second book was "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.  It is a series of letters sent back and forth between the characters post WW2. Some of the subject matter deals with the gruesome details of peoples experiences of the war as it is set mainly in Guernsey which was occupied by the Germans, however I found this to bring a real depth to the story and learnt more than I ever did in High School about the subject. The letter format is relatively easy to follow and I felt a connection with the characters. An excellent book all round really, and if you can face reading a little about WW2 then it will be worth your while.

...

Something else that I was introduced to us by Helena @ Little Mo and Friends has soothed my soul was Komaneko The Curious Cat. Oh My GOODNESS - cutest stop motion cat EVER! She is a fabric cat, that makes stop motion films, and finds friends, and sews and *sigh* all kinds of lovely things...I have Youtubed as much as I can and am desperately trying to track down a Region 4 DVD copy to watch.

It is a Japanese film however there is no dialogue to speak of other than some conversational "miaows", the soundtrack is lovely and it is mostly appropriate for all ages (the abominable snowman may worry some small viewers). Do yourself a favour and have a watch, I think you will fall in love too :)

To finish off this post is a DVD I watched last week called "Made In Dagenham". If you haven't seen the trailers it is the true story of the girls (ladies) who stood up for their right to fair pay during the 60's at the Ford factory in Dagenham UK, and changed the face of history. I loved the girls riding into work on their pushies with baskets and button up dresses, and the sets in general. I found the movie quite enjoyable and would recommend it.

What have you enjoyed lately? Any recommendations?

Tourists in our own town...

We had the great fortune of being able to have my sister stay with us for a week on her little farewell tour before moving to Japan to teach English for a year or two. It was so awesome to have her here and to be able to hang out, sight see and chat. The Munchkin was particularly pleased to have a captive "ordinence" (as she says). We have not had the opportunity to live together before, grew up in different parts of Australia/Norfolk Island but to put us side by side we are unmistakeable as sisters... looks, mannerisms, likes.... amazing! When we are together people always look at us and say "you are sisters aren't you!" and it is a lovely feeling. My sisters Bridget and Olivia and I have similarities in looks and personalities but not that blindingly obvious genetic "look".

Anyway the first tourist destination was to the Makers Workshop for Chai, a play in the Excavator and a tour of the Paper Makers Mill where we were able to make a piece of paper each! We were both inspired to try paper making ourselves one day - I even brought an old wooden picture frame on our Oppie trip later in the week to convert and will be sure to share with you how it goes.

The weather while Matilda was here was suitably Tasmanian Wintery so we worked around it. The trip to Cradle Mountain to play in the snow I had hoped to make was not to be due to road closures and bad conditions however, a trip to Tazmazia covered the snow aspect most surprisingly. As we got close Mt Roland was covered in a decent amount of snow and as we pulled into the carpark snow was falling gently like cherry blossoms! It was the most magical thing I have seen for a long time and once we decided to brave the maze (it was of course bitingly cold!) we had the most amazing time pretending we were in an Enid Blytion novel or two; playing amongst the hedge maze, climbing stiles, the snow falling on our coats and resting there...breathtaking!

Once you get through the maze you arrive at The Village Of Lower Crackpot which is the coolest village of tiny houses. We once again felt like characters of a book as we wandered giant-like amongst them. We even got to Op shop and have a warming brew...

well not quite...haha.

Despite how freezing and windy it looks the maze really protected us and we were very well rugged up for the occasion. The Munchkin was trying to catch snow on her tongue in the 3rd snow photo!

Once we got back to the car we indulged in a Tasmanian cheese and pate platter with hot tea from our thermos which was a lovely end to our adventure there. The rest of the week was full of eating yummy food, visiting Nat at the delicious Nest in Penguin, watching movies, playing and chatting.

I must say that after such a wonderful week The Munchkin and I are really feeling not having Mattie here with us now. The Munchkin burst into tears twice this afternoon, over a week after the departure and said she was missing Aunty Mattie :(

We wish her a safe, fulfilling, eye opening journey though and look forward to welcoming her back here again in what I am sure will feel like no time at all, and hey, a care parcel of kawaii goodies every now and then will help heal the pain I'm sure xx

Yours in delight,

lovely fabrics to play with, and daisy chains to make in the Winter sunshine along with...

yummy healthy lunch to have with wheat free oat bread sandwiches for The Munchkins recently recognised Wheat intolerance...

Next was setting up The Munchkins bedroom, ready for the imminent arrival of a travelling sister...

Snippets of 70's love...

We are looking forward to a week of being Tourists in our own city with my sister who is coming down from Brisbane. It's funny how we tend to only do touristy things when visitors come isn't it?

Yours in excitement,
